Entry Requirement

The following is highly recommended:

Student achievement in L1 Hard Materials, or

HOD approval requested where students can demonstrate appropriate prior experience and desire to pursue a career in the building and construction industry.

Cost

Students will be charged for materials used for individual take home projects.  Costs may vary depending on the quantity and quality of materials used.

Course Outline

Students will develop knowledge of building practices through the practical application of materials, tools and processes used within the building industry.  Projects include Outdoor Furniture and Shed building with onsite construction.  First Aid Certificate is offered through this course.

Assessment

Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation, National Certificate in Elementary Construction Skills and Level 2 NCEA Unit Standards.

First Year students will be assessed against:

US 12927   

Identify, select, maintain and use hand tools for BCATS projects - 6 credits

US 12932   

Construct timber garden furniture and items of basic construction equipment for BCATS project - 8 credits

US 12936  

Construct a non-consent timber framed utility building - 8 credits

Students studying this course in their second year will access the following L2 Unit Standards to complete the National Certificate in Elementary Construction Skills.

US 24350  

Identify, select, maintain, and use portable power tools for BCATS projects-6 credits

US 24354    

Demonstrate knowledge of and apply safe working practices  in a BCATS workplace - 4 credits

US 24357  

Receive instructions and communicate information in relation  to BCATS - 4 credits

US 24358    

Plan and monitor the construction of a BCATS project, and quality check the product - 2 credits

US 25921    Make a cupboard as a BCATS project - 6 credits

Follow safe workplace practices, and contribute to a health and safety culture, in a BCATS environment   -  2 Credits

Undertake a Stage 3 BCATS project   - 12 credits

Select, use, and maintain tools, equipment and machinery for a Stage 3 BCATS project    - 4 Credits
