NCEA Level 2 National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering

Entry Requirement

Student achievement in L1 Technology - Hard Materials is highly recommended.

HOD approval requested where students can demonstrate appropriate prior experience and a desire to pursue a career in the engineering industry. 

Cost

Additionally - Students will be charged for materials used for individual take home projects. The approximate costs for the Go-Kart are:

$110 for the materials used

$300 for the Kit including engine and components to complete the Go-Kart

Course Outline

This course will involve students in developing knowledge and practical skills in the field of Mechanical Engineering.

Process include:

  • MIG Welding
  • Gas Welding and Cutting
  • Use of Engineering Lathe
  • Introduction to the Milling Machine
  • Use of Hand tools

The main project for the year is the building of a 50cc Go-Kart or similar.

Assessment

Students’ work will be assessed against Tools for Work Level 2 Unit Standards and 23 internally assessed credits are available.

Unit Standards 

US 32051   Demonstrate and apply knowledge of mechanical engineering drawings and geometric construction in MaPS environment  -  4 credits

US 32053   Demonstrate knowledge of and apply good work practices when performing machining operations in MaPS environment  -  7 credits

US 32055   Demonstrate knowledge of and apply good work practices when performing simple fabrication operations in MaPS environment  -  7 credits

AS 91344  Implement advanced procedures using Resistant materials to make a specified product with special features - 6 Credits

 

Where Does It Lead

This course leads to trade qualifications in Mechanical Engineering at Level 4 & 5 on the NQF and ultimately to the National Diploma in Engineering Level 6.
