Year 7 Art Gallery Trip

The beautiful cave art lined the walls of the Paemanu: tauraka toi - A Landing Place exhibition, drawn with only two pencils.

Each drawing symbolizes the stories passed down through generations and shows the old ways of Māori living. The red and black colours simulate the original cave art that they would do in red and black.

Next, we went to see the paintings. Every painting told a different story and was centred in a place special to Kai Tahu people. The wonderful storyteller John Neumegen told us about the story of Tarewai and Parihaka, which were incredibly interesting and insightful.

Lastly, we did an art workshop on Māori rock art. In the workshop, we were allowed to let our creativity run wild, which was so fun.

Thank you so much John for touring us through the exhibit.
