Matariki - The Maori New Year

In this time of cold and dark it is amazing to have a celebration which starts something new. Matariki - The Maori New Year.

Matariki signals the Maori New Year.

Matariki begins with the rising of the Matariki star cluster. Mata ariki (eyes of God) and mata riki (little eyes). Matariki is a time to gather with family and friends to reflect on the past, celebrate the present and plan for the future. Matariki is a time to come together and share food and hospitality with friends and whanau, just like Jesus did with his friends and family.

Gathering together around a table was the beginning of our celebration of Eucharist - giving thanks. We know if Jesus was here(in body) in Aotearoa this Friday 24th of June, he would be wanting to be invited to join in the celebrations. Perhaps we can reach out to others in our whanau and friend group who we have not seen for a while. Use Matariki as a season of starting over and renewal. Remember Church is not a building, Church is the people.

He tangata. He tangata. He tangata.
