Principal's Message

Greetings Ngā mihi nui.

Next week the first stages of our Science Block laboratories refurbishment project commences which is great news. It is quite a complex project with an ambitious timeline to be completed by the end of Term 1 (April 12) next year. It will inevitably create some disruption but we are hopeful that our contingency plans won't upset the delivery of the science curriculum too much. Other than modernising the labs there will be some much-needed teacher resource spaces and break out areas for students to work in a much more adaptable and suitable modern learning environment. A big thank you to the science department led by Kerron Thomson and DP Steve Read for the huge amount of time spent on the detail and getting the project over the line.

Congratulations to Sarah Tsukigawa who takes over as HOD Social Studies next year from Paula Stewart. Paula has given outstanding leadership to that department over a number of years and we thank her for her service and passion. Next year Social Studies at Kavanagh will be rebranded and known as "Inquiry" which captures a more modern approach to a very important curriculum area and denotes a more broader and modern spectrum in the social science sphere. This will include areas such as the local community, environmental sustainability, technology, IT, innovation and financial literacies.

Let's keep praying for those in need at this time and taking action where we can to support others. A special mention to Br Graham Donaldson who turned 85 this week. Graham is a great example of a social justice advocate supporting many people and groups in the community such as St Vincent de Paul. Congratulations Graham and many happy returns! God Bless.
