Principal's Message

Tēnā koutou, greetings

What a wonderful first week I have had! Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to such a warm welcome – staff, students, parents, board members and those who organised and attended the beautiful handover ceremony last Thursday – I truly appreciate the generosity of your welcome to me.

Mr Steve Read commented in last week’s newsletter that he hoped I would notice the four core gospel values being lived at Kavanagh College within my first few days here. I am pleased to report that I certainly have! I have enjoyed getting into classrooms and students coming up to introduce themselves so respectfully and having a conversation. It has been good to talk to staff and students about the various service projects and the gospel values and charisms of the college being lived in everyday programmes and planning. I am also taking part in the new enrolment interviews and it has been a privilege to meet a number of our new families and whanau, and the large number of articulate and talented young people coming into our college next year. I am also looking forward to meeting as many of you, our current parents and friends of the college, as I can at various events during the coming months.

This afternoon, two of our Year 13 students, Sebastian Hook and Grace Apuwai-Bishop, will receive a 2019 Class Act Award. This award is one of excellence and is a real accolade for the students who receive it. Sebastian and Grace have exemplified commitment and excellence in their relative fields of strength as well as being excellent role models and contributors at Kavanagh College. Congratulations to both these young people for truly using their gifts – and to the people in their lives who have created the environment for them to achieve so highly.

Our tournament teams have performed very well this week and a number of them are in semi-finals and finals as I write this today. We wish them all the very best for these games and for a safe trip home. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and newsletter for more results and information. Thanks also to the staff and parents who have contributed significantly to a successful tournament week.

Lord of all blessings, thank you for the gifts you have bestowed on each one of us and thank you for the opportunities to use these gifts. Let our faith and our honour be held high so we can be true representatives of you in the world. Amen.

Ngā mihi nui
