Principal's Message

What a busy week so far! Monday saw a gathering of our Dunedin Catholic schools’ principals and relevant staff to review our progress as a community of schools and plan for our new focus for the next couple of years. This was followed by professional development during the afternoon for our whole staff on literacy assessment tools and the digital technologies curriculum and its use in classroom learning.

On Tuesday, I experienced my first Dominican Mass, celebrated by Bishop Michael Dooley, and attended by the Dominican schools in our Dunedin area. This Saturday, 8th August, is the feast day of St Dominic and I am sure that the Sisters living in Dunedin today will be celebrating the influence of their order on education in Dunedin since their arrival in 1871.

After sports tournament postponements during term two, it was good to see our students compete in the rescheduled annual Junior Catholic Sports’ Tournament on Tuesday. This is always a highly anticipated event and our students enjoyed the chance to mix with the other three secondary schools during a great day of community and challenge.

We look forward to Kavanagh Day next Friday, 14 August. Houses are working hard to polish house songs, and staff may be also working hard quietly in the background for their own performance on the day! There is plenty happening this term and the calendar is full. I encourage you to keep a close eye on events using our website.

Thank you to the families who ensured that our student helpers and guides for open day were looking particularly well dressed and well organised. They were certainly a credit to you and our school community. We had a very good number of families arrive to look around Kavanagh and the presence of these articulate, confident and friendly students was certainly appreciated.

Remember to organise your tickets for ‘Grease’ – we had a small taster on open day in the auditorium and I encourage you all to attend what looks to be a very professional show yet again!

Sports are also in full swing and if you are looking for a game to watch over the weekend, check the sports draws on the website. The teams always appreciate some extra support.
