Agribusiness Update

Field trip - On Friday the students enjoyed a day out visiting Huntley Road Dairies which is an award winning dairy farm in Outram.

Anne-Marie Wells explained how the farm operated and then gave the students a tour of the farm in including the rotary milking shed. The focus for the trip was future proofing strategies required in agribusinesses. After a relaxing picnic lunch the students were welcomed into the lab at GenomNZ (NZ Animal DNA Genotyping Cattle Sheep). This was fascinating to see how the testing is carried out. See www.agresearch.co.nz if you wish to take a look at this interesting business.

Craig Smith (Chairman of the NZ Wool Industry) visited the class this week to congratulate them on the woollen product range in Young Enterprise. Craig is enthusiastic about wool and left the students with a challenge to “think wool” as a solution as it is the best natural fibre in the world.
