TE RĀ NUI KI WAHO

Kia ora rā koutou - Greetings everyone

Room 7 from St Bernadette's School visited the college yesterday as part of their Te Rā Nui Ki Waho (The Big Day Out). As with any visit from this special school, the students were full of energy and ready for learning. Accompanied by Mr Gerard Shaw and Mrs Deb Whitty, the day began in the computer lab with a Kahoot (interactive online quiz) that tested the student's knowledge about Mahimania (Minecraft). Minecraft is a global phenomenon with 126 million active monthly users and and has over 100 billion views on YouTube every year. This teaching resource has many real world applications such as collaboration, creativity and problem solving. In the digital technology challenge the students constructed projects such as marae, kainga (village), whare (house), waka and ngā mara (gardens). In the show and tell part of the session, we were highly impressed with what was created. Year 6 student Chelsea Jarvie created a beautiful village with gardens with her team. Eli Bone and his team produced a stunning marae with it's own taniwha which was a kaitiaki or guardian.

After the digital technology session our visitors loved the Physical Education lesson in the Christian Brothers' gymnasium. Canteen manager Mrs Sharon Cowie and her team once again pulled out all of the stops and provided tino reka kai (delicious food). Thank you Sharon for your manaakitanga (hospitality) to our visitors!

HOD Science, Mrs Kerron Thomson, had the students fully engaged during the afternoon Science session in the college's new laboratories as they conducted melting and combustion experiments. 

Thanks must go to everyone who made the day a success. Our Year 7, Year 9, Year 10 and Year 12 learning mentors and former St Bernadette's pupils (Daniel Ryan, Vansh Kumar, Laura Tagg, Holly Cairns, Melissa Quinn, Antonio Rapp, Esther Moata'ane, Candice Walker, Tamsyn Clark, Evie de Graaf, Ben Mahoney, Lucas Storm and Josh Forrester) did a fantastic job. 

In week six we welcome our whānau from the Taieri - St Mary's Mosgiel.
