NCEA Level 2 with Achievement Standards

Entry Requirement

15 credits from L1 Science including in 90944 (chemistry Ext)  & 90930 (Rates of Reaction) 

15 credits from L1 Mathematics or Extension maths including 91026 or 91027     

Enrolled in a L2 Mathematics course

Chemistry is an academically challenging course and students are advised that they will need to commit to regular revision in order to ensure success in this course. Students who do not meet these entry requirements will need to discuss course entry with Mrs Mortimer.

Course Outline

The students learn practical skills through assessment and they begin to understand the fundamental chemical concepts that are necessary for future study in tertiary chemistry based Science courses.

Internals 

AS 91910 Carry out a practical investigation into a consumer product - 4 credits

AS 91167 Demonstrate understanding of oxidation-reduction processes - 3 credits

Externals

AS 91164 Demonstrate understanding of structure, bonding and energy changes in substances - 5 credits

AS 91165 Demonstrate understanding of aspects of Organic Chemistry - 4 credits

AS 91166 Demonstrate understanding of principles of Chemical Reactivity - 4 credits

 

Where Does It Lead

L3 Chemistry

Please note that Level 3 Chemistry is academically demanding and to enable success, you should aim to achieve at least 20 credits at Level 2 including two, but preferably all three of the external standards. 

University and Polytechnic Study.

Chemistry is necessary for a wide range of jobs, including veterinary science, nursing, medicine, agricultural sciences, and food technology courses.
