Shakespearean Success

Last Thursday 29 Trinity students spent the day at the King’s and Queen’s Performing Arts Centre watching and performing Shakespeare.

We had four groups enter the regional Shakespeare Festival this year and each of them prepared a 5-minute scene (one from The Tempest, another from Twelfth Night, and two from A Midsummer Night’s Dream). The students involved spent many weeks learning lines and rehearsing during their morning tea and lunchtime breaks.

11 schools from across the region participated in the event and our students all performed wonderfully well. Three of our groups were selected to present their scenes at the final showcase in the evening and Trinity came away with a number of different awards:

  • Best 5 Minute Scene: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Jeremy Meikle, Isaac Tili, Nuala Kelly, Meadow Stewart)

  • Runner-Up 5 Minute Scene: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Phoebe Harris, Sophie Golden, Matilda Andersen, Ariel Holloway, Anamika Jones, Ciana McIver, Saira Eldho, Ella Carruthers, Eden Webb, Nuala Kelly, Meadow Stewart, Charlotte Harris, Oliver Lodge, Tom Restall)

  • NSSP (National Shakespeare Schools Production) Direct Entry Award: Phoebe Harris

  • Denise Walsh Best Ensemble Award: The Tempest

  • Best Use of Comedy Award: Ciana McIver (Maria in Twelfth Night)

  • Best Use of Sound Award: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

  • Realisation of Text and Delivery Award: Isaac Tili (Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream)

  • Excellent Realisation of Character Award: Nuala Kelly (Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream)

As a result of winning the 5 minute scene category, Trinity students Jeremy, Isaac, Nuala, and Meadow will now represent the region at the National Shakespeare Competition in Wellington in early June.

Congratulations to all the students who took part - Trinity is very proud of you, your performances, and your achievements.
