Matariki Night Market and Showcase

To honour Matariki, Trinity Catholic College is introducing an exciting new initiative: the Matariki Night Market and Showcase, to be held on 19 July from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm.

This event aims to create a vibrant, inclusive, and culturally enriching experience for the entire community. Connections and engagement with local iwi and whanau are fundamental to this event.

The initiative was developed as part of the NCEA Level One Commerce programme. Students must carry out, review and refine a business activity within a community context with guidance (Achievement Standard 90848). The Commerce students will host the night market stalls offering traditional Māori kai, plants, arts and crafts, games, and locally sourced food and beverages.

The showcase will feature performances that pay tribute to Māori culture and highlight students' diverse talents and creativity. It is a free event and suitable for all ages. Attendees can look forward to kapa haka performances, dance routines, poetry recitals, songs and a stunning Matariki-themed wearable arts parade. It will be an occasion for cultural appreciation, educational experiences, and meaningful connections. Several departments, including Maori, Commerce, Dance, English, Technology, and Music, will be involved. The focus is on student-led initiatives, and the students have embraced the opportunities offered.

This event seeks to unite the wider community to celebrate and appreciate Māori culture. All schools in the Kāhui Ako will be invited to attend. This event allows people of all backgrounds to exchange cultures, fostering understanding, unity, and respect.

The evening promises to be an exciting and enriching event that honours the spirit of Matariki and celebrates diversity and whanaukataka (community spirit).
