Tō mātou haerenga ki Karitāne/ Our trip to Karitāne

On Friday the Year 10 Te Reo Māori class spent the day at Karitāne.

Firstly Kiri Parata guided us around the Huriawa Pā site, and spoke about the history, encouraging our rakatahi to pursue pathways such as Marine Biology. Kāi Tahu are currently working with the University of Otago and there is much work to be done in the restoration of the kelp beds.

In the afternoon Alex and Kane led us on a waka ama expedition up river, across to Ohinepouwera (the spit). Here we planted some pingao grass and learnt about the 200 year restoration plan. For most of our students this was their first experience of waka ama, ka mau te wehi! (it was awesome).

Nei te mihi ki te hau kāinga, ki a Kiri koutou ko Kane, ko Alex i tā koutou ārahi o te kaupapa kāmehameha nei. Ka pū ki ruha, ka hao te rakatahi!
