Kavanagh had its best-ever showing in the Otago/Southland Intermediate Chess Championship on Saturday, August 8th.

This year's Intermediate championship was held at the Kavanagh College library. Our team-of-four is a mixture of experienced and new players, and they all produced a number of memorable games against some very good opponents. There were a number of epic battles!

Also pleasing was another strong effort from Kavanagh's Senior team in the Secondary Champs at LPHS. While we didn't place in the top 3, highlights included Andrew Wilson who drew his game with the top board 1 player, and Alison Latawan who beat the top board 4 player.

These championships are quite demanding, with the players completing 7 rounds of chess over 5 hours. That's a long time to concentrate and it's highly competitive. Well done to all our players for producing some fine chess.

Kavanagh's Intermediate Chess team is:

Board 1 (captain) Ethan Then

Board 2 Joseph Chen

Board 3 Joseph Kelly

Board 4 Brent Manangan

Kavanagh's Senior Chess team is:

Board 1 (captain) Andrew Wilson

Board 2 Samuel Kelly

Board 3 Joshua Chen

Board 4 Alison Latawan
